Potions confused the hell out of me when I started playing Sabrous. But like spell syntax, it's just knowing the correct keywords, how to type so that the computer knows what you're talking about! First of all, to use a potion, you quaff it. After awhile you can just say q {potion} for shorthand. Once you know the action word, however, what about the keywords? There are a wide variety of potions on Sabrous, and if you usually will need to select a particular potion in your inventory. Newbs may be frustrated to find that no matter many times they try to get a particular potion, it just won't come to them. They type "get potion," and nothing happens! What the fuck, they exclaim, why is this so?! This is because, even though they are potions, you'll make a BIG step forward by never using "potion" as a keyword. It's mostly worthless, because a) you almost ALWAYS need a specific kind of potion, and even if you're using only one kind at a given moment, most players eventually end up using a variety. b) many potions don't even have "potion" as a keyword attached to them. So what do you do? You use the specific potion's name as its keyword, of course. For a healing potion, you can quaff heal, for an aquabreath potion, you quaff aqua, for detect hidden, you quaff hidden, for a shield potion, you quaff shield, for a fly potion, you quaff fly, for a heal plus potion, you quaff plus, and so on! Nonsense, you might say! I only use one kind of potion, I don't need to use the specific keywords! Well, to this I say, all of the potions sold in the shops are important buffs, and eventually, if you're an enterprising explorer, you'll learn the use of each of the buffs they offer! Practical ones like fly (saves you movepoints) and heal (restores hitpoints) are obvious, but the others allow a player to access certain mobs and areas in the game, so if one can't cast those spells themselves, the potions certainly are not worthless! Even if you're only using one kind, it's worthwhile getting into the habit of referring to it by the specific keyword.
